Story Map

Shanty Theatre’s Storymap

Stories are everywhere. They creep between the brickwork of houses, hide in alleyways, run free in the fields and set sail across the sea. The make up the fabric of the world, and are the glue that holds it together. No Shanty play has celebrated this more than our 2014 production of The Story Giant, based on the book by Brian Patten. In the play the Story Giant had collected every story that had ever been told. Except one. He kept them all in a huge library, as vast as the panoply of human existence; as soon as a story was told, it appeared in his library.

We’re guessing he struggled to keep it all in alphabetical order.

We wanted to find a way for our audiences to contribute to their own online library of stories, however modest it finished up when compared to the Story Giant’s vast archive. So we invented The Storymap.

The Storymap is a record of stories that have been generated in response to the play The Story Giant. It may be a collection of the work created in one of Shanty’s workshops. It may be a story tweeted into Shanty over the course of the project. It may be a story similar to one of the ones seen in the play, but from a different culture or country (you’d be surprised how many similar stories there are). Whenever someone submits a story, a red dot on the map pops up. It’s our intention to keep contributing to the map, and to encourage others to keep contributing too wherever they are in the world. Because stories are important. And it’s good to share.
